Merthyr Tydfil (x Aphelion)

September 6, 2026

Comet opens have been held at Merthyr Tydfil for many years. A fantastic Comet National Championship was held here in 2024. The club is nestled on the shores of a large reservoir in a beautiful off-grid location, which is within the Brecon Beacons National Park (known in Welsh as Bannau Brycheiniog – or informally as ‘the Bannau’). All facilities are available thanks to the efforts of the club members, who are excellent hosts. If the sun shines the views are spectacular.

How to Find Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club

Since the upgrade to the Head of the Valleys Road (A465), the route to the sailing club has changed slightly. From the A465 follow the signs to the Brecon Mountain Railway, but instead of turning into its car park continue straight on. Keep right at the junction just beyond the old railway bridge. The road will take you to the bottom of the valley at which point you must bear right, up the hill. When you reach the east end of the reservoir dam, continue straight ahead along the east side of the reservoir. In about one hundred metres take the left gate, the other is for the second Mountain Railway station. The sailing club is a further 1300 metres further along this road, with the reservoir on your left and the railway on your right. If you think you are going into the middle of no-where, you are probably going in the right direction! When you get to the sailing club bear right past the sailing club. At the last moment, the track turns sharp left and down into the club compound.
